Being Kind to Yourself

-

Summertime always brings so much fun and excitement, but it also tends to bring up tons of insecurities about how we look. There's no denying that wearing a swimsuit can be intimidating. My good friend Maggie recently tweeted: "Seeing 'How To Get a Bikini Body'  posts makes my heart hurt. How to get a bikini body? You put a bikini on your body, that simple." This girl is wise beyond her years and I am proud to call her a friend. Maggie brought to my attention something that is really relevant and so important right now. And that is being kind to yourself. I'm sure the topic body image and self love is incredibly relevant to many of us. When we look in the mirror, it is so easy to pick out our perceived "flaws" instead of recognizing the beautiful human beings we are. I've posted about body image before, and I don't think we can emphasize it's importance enough. Today the always lovely holistic health coach, Maria Marlowe, is here to share her perspective on being kind to your body and mind.

Being Kind to Yourself
Guest Post by Maria Marlowe

I’m sure you can agree, nothing good ever came out of hate, right? So why would you ever want to hate on yourself? A negative body image is something many women struggle with; I’ve seen some reports say that as many 70% of women don’t like their body! I used to feel that way, too. Throughout high school and college, I had very bad acne, which I tormented myself over. I would just sit in the mirror and cry over how hideous I had become, and feel awful about my terrible misfortune. The more I obsessed over it, the more I picked at it, and the worse it got. But, when I finally let go and made a conscious effort not to cry or hurl insults or be upset over it, and instead focus  on finding the root cause of it and experimenting to get rid of it, lo and behold my skin calmed down, and eventually cleared up. In doing research, I realized that many of our ailments are our body’s SOS that we’re not taking care of our body correctly.

If you struggle with body image issues, start a daily gratitude practice. Every day as soon as you wake up list 5 things you’re grateful for, either in your head or in a journal. And if you have a specific body image hang up, like “I hate my fat thighs”, make sure you say something nice about them, like, “I am so grateful for my strong legs that allow me to run and walk”.

When you are hating yourself, it’s so much easier to quit, or make poor food and lifestyle choices. However, when you accept and love your body, all of a sudden it becomes so much easier to take care of it and nourish it properly. Remember, you’re the only one who can take care of yourself. This is the only body you’ve got, so make sure you treat it like gold.

Healthy and Easy 4th of July Snack

-

I love the Fourth of July. To me, it means family, fun, fireworks, and plenty of food! Today I'm sharing my favorite festive snack. It is so cute and so simple! All you need is one large box of strawberries, one large box of blueberries, a bag of white chocolate covered pretzels, and a casserole dish. Arrange your red, white, and blue ingredients to look like the American Flag, and you're done! Possibly the quickest, easiest, and healthiest holiday recipe I've ever made. Do you have any plans for Independence Day? I am super excited to be heading to the lake with two of my best friends. Kick Start 2015 With Caroline

-
Happy New Year from India! Caroline was so sweet to help ring in the new year here at Practically Imperfect with this fun post. Caroline is definitely one of my favorite up-and-coming bloggers. She always keeps it young and fresh while staying mature and poised. And her health and fashion tips are always so inspiring. Here's to kick starting a healthier 2015!
*****

Hi everyone! I'm Caroline from citrus & style and I'm so thrilled to be guest posting for Hannah today. Since 2015 is finally here, let's be real, you're probably wanting to make some changes to your lifestyle to make it a bit healthier (I know I am!). I am generally a pretty healthy person, but when it comes to exam time or the holiday season, everything gets out of whack. One of my main goals for the new year is to create a perfect workout routine for myself, one that not only I won't mind doing but will be easy to stick with for the rest of the year. Below I have some tips + tricks for making your own workout plan, as well as my routine for inspiration for yours!

+ Motivate yourself
The first crucial step in this entire process is to make sure you are motivated to workout and engage in a healthy lifestyle. I personally keep a health + fitness board on Pinterest and often scroll through it when I'm lacking in the motivation department. Find your own way to get yourself enthusiastic to be healthy and I promise you will stick with your new routine!

+ Make a List of Exercise Activities
Next it's important to decide which activities you actually enjoy doing, rather than ones you know you won't be able to get yourself to do. For me, I know I hate swimming, so I can cross that off the workout routine possibilities.

+ Be Realistic
It's one thing to say you're going to go run 5 miles and then do 100 push ups, but it's quite another to actually get your butt to the gym and do it. It's important to figure out what works for you, not just what you find on a Pinterest version!

+ Test It Out
Once you have come up with a list of exercise activities, go test it out! Whether it's taking a jog around your neighborhood for 30 minutes and then coming home to do a plank and some wall sits, or going to play tennis for an hour, test out what you've come up with to make sure it is something you enjoy and is easy to stick with.

+ Display Your Routine
It's funny: I always have the intention to workout everyday, but sometimes that just doesn't happen ;) To make sure you don't get in that bad habit of forgetting to workout, make your routine visible either on your desk, as a picture on your phone or a file on your computer. Don't forget about it otherwise you will forget to go shred some calories!

Ok, now onto my routine! Mine changes depending on the season and what sports I have going on, but during the winter I do pre-season training for lacrosse which consists of a lot of running on the treadmill.

Comment below if you're excited to start off the year with a healthy lifestyle!

Think Outside The Lunchbox: Simple Snacking

-
Welcome to week three of "Think Outside The Lunchbox"! This week Mandy and I will be covering our favorite simple snacks, and now that we've reached the halfway point of this series, we want to hear from you! What meals or topics would you like us to cover? Please leave your suggestions in the comments below!

1. The Fresh
Bell Pepper Slices: 25 calories per pepper
Bell peppers are so low calorie that they make the perfect snack for mindlessly munching on while doing homework or watching TV.

2. The Fruity
Annie's Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks: 70 calories per bag
I always carry these in my purse in case I'm feeling low energy. The fruit sugar gives me the perfect boost, but beware these fruit snacks are so addictive and it's tempting to eat like twelve packages at a time... trust me. I know from experience.

3. The Sweet
Fiber One Brownies: 90 calories per brownie
When the inevitable chocolate craving hits, try this low calorie brownie! Your sweet tooth will be satisfied and you won't feel guilty.

4. The Spicy
The Good Bean Smoky Chili & Lime: 120 calories per serving
I just discovered these yummy roasted chickpeas! The chili-lime flavor is anything but bland and I find myself snacking a little too much on these.

5. The Savory
Pirate's Booty: 130 calories per serving
These baked cheese puffs are what I would describe as healthy Cheetos. They're my go to snack during break at school

1. Boom Chicka Pop: 35 calories per serving
There are 12 different flavors- one for every craving!

2. Kind Granola Bars: 150 calories per bar
Basically Kind anything is delicious and gluten free. Kind brand products are a staple in my diet.

3. Mini Clif Bars: 100 calories per bar
Being gluten free and a vegetarian, its hard to eat out. When I’m out running errands or shopping, I like to keep a mini Clif Bar in my bag or purse to keep me tied over in between meals.

4. Sabra Hummus: 80 calories per serving
Normally I end up buying the individual hummus packages because I eat the whole family sized tub in one sitting….

5. Nature’s Path Sunrise Crunchy Vanilla: 110 calories per serving
My love for this crunchy and sweet snack is unreal. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or late night snack) this gluten free cereal is my go to.
